Institute for Materials Testing, Materials Science and Strength of Materials

The Institute for Materials Testing, Materials Science and Strength of Materials (IMWF) works with the Materials Testing Institute (MPA) in the field of materials and components. The main focus is on materials testing and simulation as well as on component calculation and analysis. This connection between materials science and strength of materials analysis with its diverse calculation methods is a unique selling point for the institute. The scale-independent used calculation methods extend from simulations on atomic level to macroscopic methods of simulation such as Finite Elements. They are linked as well with approaches from fluid mechanics.

The focus of IMWF’s portfolio is on metallic materials, but also on polymers, ceramics and composite materials. The application focus lies on additive manufacturing, innovative joining processes, safety analyses of technical equipment and the creation of progressive material models.

The institute’s demanding and innovative teaching includes an extensive module offering from basic studies to a Master’s degree. Comparable with the research, the institute imparts the complex interaction between material and component calculation to the students.

Furthermore, there is a broadly diversified selection of project, bachelor and master theses. Also, the institute offers the possibility to integrate a stay abroad into the course of the study.
